'Ways of Seeing' - John Berger

'Ways of Seeing' -  John Berger
John Berger says that publicity will change our lives, as it (publicity) is trying to persuade us to buy something more than we need, and that this will change ourselves, or our lives; this making us in some way richer, even though that we will be poorer for buying the products that are being advertised.  Berger goes on to explain that publicity persuades us of this transformation by showing us people that have apparently been transformed. and this is what he says is what constitutes to 'glamour', and that publicity is the process of manufacturing glamour.

Berger identifies the relationship that there is between an oil painting and colour photography. He says that publicity - ie. photography, and oil painting use many of the same references - and all of them related to the principle that you are what you have. Photography takes much of its inspiration from paintings in general, in the way that they are laid out, to wealth and sings of love.

In the episode there are three dreams in which Berger mentions; The first dream that he mentions is 'The later tonight',  that the use of publicity shows us that buy having this products it will not only make you the buyer happy, but also the people around you happy. that buy having these products is that you are surrounding yourself with pleasure. The second dream is 'The skin Dream', relates to the surface that you can touch and admire yet not feel bad as you are unaware of who the person in the image is. Lastly 'The dream of a faraway place' - "To lie down on a bed alone, to allows one thoughts to pass through the light of the window, to travel elsewhere and conjure images, distances without horizons, to be in two worlds at the same time, just where Europe ends.'-  what this saying is that publicity offers the chance of escapism, to allow the mind to dream and imagine that you are somewhere else.

In the episode Berger also sates that publicity also works on our anxieties - about money and the possible lack there of, making us the viewer to try to earn a much as we can so that we can go out and buy these products they they are promoting. it also plays on the ideas that we are not desirable and that we need the products to make us enviable.
